(This is a channeled post.)
When we care for one another, we find that our love grows. We find that we can touch the goodness within all of us. When we help others, we can grow in compassion. We can grow in spiritual strength.
This is very important because when we find ourselves in conflict or adversity, we need to understand how to get back to the place of peace. And the place of peace is the same as the place of compassion within us. It is the love within us, the light within us, the source within us. This is the connection we have with everyone. Everyone has the same light within.
So when we help others, we connect to the light within all of us. When you help others unconditionally, without expectation of receiving something in return, this is a manifestation of love, of God, of the light within. That is the light that we all share.
Understanding how to access and strengthen our connection to the light within, the goodness within, is a very important practice. Let’s use a simple example. If you are standing on a street corner and somebody comes by and slips and falls right in front of you, and you just look the other way or walk away, you are not acting from compassion. Whereas, if you help the person stand up or ask them what you can do for them, that is acting from compassion. You would not say, “I’ll help you get up if you give me $20.” That is not compassion.
Learning to help one another from a place of love is a very important component of our new way of being. It’s not about what we can get from each other. It’s not about comparing ourselves to one another. It’s not about having more than someone else. We have to remember that we are all the same on a deep level. The only differences are on the surface. And some people are more confused than others. Some people are less connected to the light within, the love within, the compassion within than others. These people will suffer more because of this. They don’t understand this. They think that connecting to the light within is something that’s outdated or a myth or a religious practice.
“Modern” people often think that they don’t need to look within, that they don’t need to look at their behavior or how it affects humanity. But they are very unsettled inside. They can’t understand why this is so and they think they need more things or more money or more experiences to make them feel happy and settled.
We can’t stress enough that this is not the correct way of living. The correct way of living is to connect to the light within, the source within, God within, the peace within—whatever you want to call it. It is life itself. We have to connect with that in order to live fully and truly be at peace.
When you’re looking to try to get things from other people or feel more special than other people, then you will ultimately suffer because this is egoic self-centeredness. Ultimately we all have to transcend the egoic self-centeredness. Egoic self-centerness makes up most of our daily reality. It’s very hard for us to see this in ourselves. But most of our thoughts and actions revolve around things that will appease the ego or strengthen the ego in ourselves. This is why focusing on the love within, the light within, the source within, the being within is very important.
The gravitational pull of the egoic self-centeredness is very strong. It takes a lot of spiritual strength to step out of it. It’s like being trapped in a strong current, and the current then sucks you into a whirlpool, into a vortex. In the case of the ego, the vortex is made up of thoughts and emotions that pull you deeper in.
Later we will explain what some of these thoughts and emotions are and how they operate. There are certain patterns that the ego-mind uses to keep you trapped, and there are certain things that it needs in order to survive and strengthen itself. When you remove the ego’s source sources of food, it will collapse. This is what we are going to learn.
Today, let’s just focus on one type of thought. This is the type of thought that draws you into fear. The thought pattern goes something like this: I don’t have enough or I’m not enough, and I need to prove myself, I need to get more things, I need to do more things.
In order to get out of this thought pattern of insufficiency/inadequacy/lack, you need to look closely at your thoughts surrounding these things. If your main concern is lack of money or material things, then look at that. If your main concern is your lack of importance or worthiness, then look at that.
When you look deeply, you’ll find that at the root of this is a feeling of not having enough. And the feeling of not having enough stems from a fear of uncertainty. It’s a fear of the instability of the physical body, which you equate with life itself. But life itself is not the physical body. This is what you need to understand.
So today’s practice is to sit in a quiet place and close your eyes and look within deeply. Look at your patterns of insufficiency and inadequacy. Every ego has some patterns of thoughts related to this. When you find yours and look at them closely, you can say the following:
Wherever I go, Love is here.
