Today we’re going to look at the ego’s favorite mantra, which is “How dare they!”
My ego, Little Bitch, is currently manifesting as Little Angry Victim Bitch. And lately she’s been screaming in my ear about someone close to me: “How dare he do that to me!”
As I’ve said before, whenever you hear an “How dare he/she/they!” in your head, you can be sure it’s the voice of your ego. Just notice it—don’t attach to it and don’t let it latch on to your mind and emotions. I just acknowledge my ego and let it go, which sounds like this: “Hi Little Bitch, I love you but I don’t need your help anymore!” Then I take a conscious breath into my lower abdomen, even laying my hands on my lower abdomen to focus attention there.
But let’s go a step further and look at the inherent folly in this indignant mantra of disguised egoic superiority and transform it into the Truth.
“How dare he do that to me!” is more truthfully stated as:
“How dare his ego do that to me!”
And this is more truthfully stated as:
“How dare his unconsciousness do that to me!”
Which if you dig even further to the Truth, could be expressed as:
“How dare unconsciousness do that to me!”
Now isn’t that ridiculous?!? Unconsciousness isn’t personal. And neither is ego.
Actually you could go even one step further and say:
“How dare unconsciousness do that to my sense of self!”
Or
“How dare unconsciousness do that to the empty shell that is ‘me’!”
Or simply:
“How dare unconsciousness do that!”
Insane, right? And I could have believed and reacted from the original “How dare he” thought my whole life! That’s how most people live!
What I’ve described here a form of spiritual inquiry—looking deeply into and questioning the meaning of your thoughts in order to break free.
